JLPT N5 - Lesson 6 - Katakana - Part 2

Dakuon and Handakuon produces same sounds as like as Hiragana. Need to be careful for these two characters ジ (Ji) and ヅ (Dju)as the looks are very similar.

Ya - Yu - Yo Sounds - like as Hiragana characters these Katakana characters also make the same sounds. Below is the whole chart of those characters with ヤ (ya), ユ (yu), ヨ (yo) - sounds:

Plese note that if after any consonant vowel, any pure vowel such as 'a i u e o' is used then it become long vowel. For long vowel'ー' this sign (a long dash sign) is used for writing words in Katakana to denote the long vowel sound.

Now let's practice some words in Katakana:

  • スキー[suk i _] = Ski
  • ソース [so _ su] = Sauce
  • サッカー [sakka _] = Soccer
  • クイズ [kuizu] = Quiz
  • キック [kikku] = Kick
  • チーズ [ch i _ zu] = Cheese
  • コーク [ko _ ku] = Coke
  • タクシー [takush i _] = Taxi
  • ケーキ [ke _ ki] = Cake
  • デザート [deza _ to] = Dessert
